Active Listening:
An Interactive Learning Experience

? What Is Active Listening?

Active Listening is a skill which helps you truly understand what a person is saying and generally makes the person feel that you hear and understand. It does not always mean that you agree, but that you understand. Often people do not like to use this technique because when you first start practicing, it can sound like a formula. However, if you keep at it, you will soon find a way to use it that fits with your own personal style.

When using Active Listening, you want to be sure that you understand the content of what the person is saying and also the feelings about the content. In its simplest form Active Listening is a two part sentence:
  • You feel (insert a feeling)
  • when (insert a situation)
Example: You feel put down when your boss criticizes your work
